Three capacitors `3 muF, 6 muF` and `6 muF` are connected in series to source of 120 V. The potential difference in volt, across the `3 muF` capacitor will be

A

24

B

30

C

40

D

60

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
d

In the given circuit , `C_(1),C_(2)andC_(3)` are connected in series. The equivalent capacitance of these capacitors is
`(1)/(C_(s))=(1)/(C_(1))+(1)/(C_(2))+(1)/(C_(3))=(1)/(3)+(1)/(6)+(1)/(6)=(4)/(6) or C_(s)=(3)/(2)muF`
Let Q be charge on each capacitor.
`thereforeQ=(120V)((3)/(2)muF)=180muC`
Potential difference across `C_(1)(=3muF)` is `V_(1)=(Q)/(C_(1))=(180muC)/(3muF)=60V`
