Answer the following :
An artificial satellite orbitting the earth in very thin atmosphere loses its energy gradually due to dissipation against atmospheric resistance, however small. Why then does its speed increase progressively as it comes closer and closer to the earth?

Text Solution

An artificial satellite is moving in an orbit around the earth with a velocity equal to one-third the escape velocity from the surface of the earth. (ii) The satellite comes to rest in its orbit and then is allowed to fall freely on to the surface of the earth. Find the speed with which the satellite strikes the earth's surface. Given radius of earth =6400 km.

A satellite is revolving in a circular orbit at a height h from the earth's surface (radius of earth R,h lt lt R ). The minimum increase in its orbital velocity required so that the satellite could escape from the earth's gravitational field , is close to :(Neglect the effect of atmosphere)
