A 100 muF capacitor in series with a 40 ...

A 100 `muF` capacitor in series with a 40 `Omega` resistance is connected to a 110 V, 60 Hz supply.
(a) What is the maximum current in the circuit?
(b) What is the time lag between the current maximum and the voltage maximum?

Text Solution

For a RC circuit, if `V=V_(0) sin omega t`
`I=(V_(0))/(sqrt(R^(2)+(I//omega C)^(2))) sin(omega t+phi)` where `tan phi=(1)/(omegaCR)`
(a) `I_(0)=3.23A`
(b) `phi=33.5^(@)`
Time lag `=(phi)/(omega)=1.55ms`
