Why is H2O a liquid and H2S a gas ?...

Why is `H_2O` a liquid and `H_2S ` a gas ?

Text Solution

Due to greater electronegativity of O than S, `H_2O` undergoes extensive intermolecular H-bonding. As a result, `H_2O` exists as an associated molecule. Quite a larger amount of energy is required to break these H-bonds. Therefore, `H_2O` is a liquid at room temperature.
`------H-underset(H)underset(|)O-----H-underset(H)underset(|)O--------H-underset(H)underset(|)O-------`
In contrast, `H_2S` does not undergo H-bonding as the electronegativity difference between H and S is not appreciable. It exists as discrete molecules which are held together by weak van der Waals. forces of attraction. To break these forces of attraction, only a small amount of energy is required.
Therefore, `H_2S` is a gas at room temperature.
