Why does nitrogen show catenation proper...

Why does nitrogen show catenation properties less than phosphorus ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The property of catenation depends upon the strength of the element-element bond. Weaker the bond, smaller is the possibility of catenation. Since the N-N (159 kJ `"mol"^(-1)` ) bond strength is much weaker than P-P (213 kJ `"mol"^(-1)`) bond strength, therefore, nitrogen shows less catenation properties than phosphorus.
