Explain the following giving reasons :
(i) It is difficult to separate lanthanoid elements in pure state.
(ii) The transition elements form interstitial compounds.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) It is because lanthanoid have similar ionic size and similar properties, that makes their separation difficult.
(ii) The transition metals have voids in their crystal lattice into which small atoms like H, C, etc., fit resulting in the formation of interstitial compounds.
