A man deposited Rs 10000 in a bank at the rate of 5% simple interest annually. Find the amount in 15^(th) year since he deposited the amount and also calculate the total amount after 20 years.

A machine costs 5,00,000. If its value depreciates 15% in the first year, 13 (1/2) % in the second year, 12% in the third year and so on. What will be its value at the end of 10 years, when all the percentages will be applied to the original cost? [Total depression =15 + 13(1/2) + 12+ ......10 terms S_(n) = 10/2[30-13.5] = 82.5% therefore after 10 years original cost = 100 - 82.5 = 17.5, i.e. 17.5% of 5,00,000.

Of the students in a college, it is known that 60% reside in hostel and 40% are day scholars (not residing in hostel). Previous year results report that 30% of all students who reside in hostel attain A grade and 20% of day scholars attain A grade in their annual examination. At the end of the year, one student is chosen at random from the college and he has an A grade, what is the probability that the student is a hostlier?

A great physicist of this century (P.A.M. Dirac) loved playing with numerical values of Fundamental constants of nature. This led him to an interesting observation. Dirac found that from the basic constants of atomic physics(c,e, mass of electron, mass of proton) and the gravitational constant G, he could arrive at a number with the dimension of time. Further, it was a very large number, its magnitude being close to the present estimate on the age of the universe (~ 15 billion years). From the table of fundamental constants in this book, try to see if you too can construct this number (or any other interesting number you can think of ). If its coincidence with the age of the universe were significant , what would this imply for the constancy of fundamental constants ?
