The apparatus shown in the figure consists of four glass columns connected by horizontal section. The height of two central column B and C are 49 cm each. The two outer columns A and D are open to the temperature. A and C are maintained at a temperature of 95^@C while the columns B and D are maintained at 5^@C . The height of the liquid in A and D measured from the base the are 52.8 cm and 51cm respectively. Determine the coefficient of thermal expansion of the liquid

A thin tube of uniform cross-section is sealed at both ends. It lies horizontally, the middle 5 cm containing mercury and the two equal end containing air at the same pressure P. When the tube is held at an angle of 60^@ with the vetical direction, the length of the air column above and below the mercury column are 46 cm and 44.5 cm respectively. Calculate the pressure P in centimeters of mercury. (The temperature of the system is kept at 30^@C ).

A metal bar 70 cm long and 4.00 kg in mass supported on two knife-edges placed 10 cm from each end. A 6.00 kg load is suspended at 30 cm from one end. Find the reactions at the knife- edges. (Assume the bar to be of uniform cross section and homogeneous.)

In a human pyramid in a circus, the entire weight of the balanced group is supported by the legs of a performer who is lying on his back. The combined mass of all the persons performing the act, and the tables, plaques etc. involved is 280 kg. The mass of the performer lying on his back at the bottom of the pyramid is 60 kg. Each thighbone (femur) of this performer has a length of 50 cm and an effective radius of 2.0 cm. Determine the amount by which each thighbone gets compressed under the extra load. (g = 9.8 ms ^(-2)) Young's Modulus for bone Y=9.4xx 10 ^(9) Nm^(-2).
