Five solution A, B, C, D and E when tested with universal indicator showd pH as 4, 1, 11, 7 and 9 respectively. Which solution is
(a) neutral ? (b) stongly alkaline ?
(c ) strongly acidic ? (d) weakly acidic ?
(e) weakly alkaline ?
Arrange the pH in increasing order of hydrogen ion concentration.

Hydrogen ions concentration increases with decreases in pH value - below -7.
Consequently the strength of acid increases from pH value 7 to 0.
On the other hand hydroxide ions concentrated increased with increases in pH value from 7 consequently strength of base increase with increase in pH value from 7 to 14.
Neutral solution has pH value equal to 7.
Therefore,
(a)Solution D is neutral having pH value equal to 7
(b) Solution C is strongly alkaline as its pH value is equal to 11.
(c ) Solution B is strongly acidic as its pH value is equal to 1
(d) Solution A is weakly acidic as its pH value is equal to 4
(e) Solution E is weakly alkaline as its pH value is equal to 9
Arrangement of given pH values in increasing order of hydrogen ion concentraiton :
`11 lt 9 lt 7 lt 4 lt 1`
