In the manufacture of sodium hydroxide, hydrogen gas and chlorine gas (X) are frmed as by - products. When chlorine gas (X) reacts with lime water, it forms calcium oxychloride (bleaching powder) Y. The reactions are
`2NaCl(aq) + 2H_(2)O(l) rarr 2NaOH(aq) + Cl_(2)(g) + H_(2)(g)`
`X rarr Cl_(2)` (Chlorine gas)
`Ca(OH)_(2)(s) + Cl_(2)(g) rarr CaOCl_(2)(s) + H_(2)O`
Y - Calcium oxychloride (bleaching powder)
