Equal lengths of magnesium ribbons are taken in test tubes A and B. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is added to test tube A, while acetic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)` is added to test tube B. Amount of concentration taken for both acids are same. In which test tube will the fizzing occur more vigorously and why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) .A. will show vigorous reaction.
(b) It is became `H_(2)SO_(4)` is a strong acid.
(c ) Hydrogen gas is liberated. Bring a burning splinter near the gas. It will burn with .Pop. Sound. It shows that the gas liberated is hydrogen.
(d) `Mg + H_(2)SO_(4) rarr MgSO_(4) + H_(2) uarr`.
`Mg + H_(2)CO_(3) rarr MgCO_(3) + H_(2) uarr`
(e) `.A. (H_(2)SO_(4))` will have lower pH.
.B. `(H_(2)CO_(3))` will have lower concentration of `H^(+)`.
