Zener diode is used to regulate an unregulated DC power supply.
Zener diode is a p-n-junction diode specially designed to work only in the reverse breakdown region. It is made from highly doped p and n type semiconductors. It's power rating is kept high so that it is not damaged by the large reverse current. The voltage across such a diople remains constant.
