(a) What is an electromagent ? Draw a circuit diagram to show how a soft iron piece can be transformed into an electromagnet ?

(a) An electromagent is a rod of magnetic (say soft iron) placed inside a solenoid coil . On passing current in solenoid coil , ion rod begins to behave as a magnet . On stopping the current flow, magnetisation of iron is lost . Thus , a soft iron piece behave as an electromagnet .
(b) The strenght of an electromagnet can be inscreased by .
(i) increasing the amount of turns of winding of the solenoid coil wrapped around the electromagnet or .
(ii) increasing the amount of electric current flowing through the coil.
