Using valence bond theory, predict the shape and magnetism (paramagnetic or diamagnetic) of `[Co(CO)_(4)]^(-)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration of Co : `4s^(2)3d^(7)`
Electronic configuration of `CO^(-1) = 4s^(2)3d^(8)`
CO is a strong ligand causing pairing of electrons. Thus, `Co^(-1) : 4s^(0)3d^(10)`

It has `sp^(3)` hybridisation and tetrahedral geometry. As there are no unpaired electrons, the complex ion is diamagnetic.
