Using the valence bond approach, deduce the shape and magnetic character of `[Cr(CO)_(6)]`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electronic configuration of Cr

Cr(0) in `[Cr(CO)_(6)]` has electronic configuration [Ar) `4s^(0)3d^(6)`. This is because CO will cause pairing of electrons as it is strong field ligand.

`d^(2)sp^(3)` hybridisation, takes place giving octahedral shape. As there are no unpaired electrons, it is diamagnetic.
