Square planar complexes with coordinatio...

Square planar complexes with coordination number 4 exhibit geometrical isomerism whereas tetrahedral complexes do not. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Tetrahedral complexes do not exhibit geometrical isomerism because the relative positions of the ligands with respect to each other is the same. The square planar complexes on the other hand show geometrical isomerism. If same kind of ligands occupy positions adjacent to each other, it is called cis- form and if these are opposite to each other, it is called trans- form.
