Why is `[NiCl_(4)]^(2-)` paramagnetic while `[Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-)` is diamagnetic ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`[NiCl_(4)]^(2-)` uses outer orbital in hybridisation `(sp^(3))`. It has two unpaired electrons as shown below:
Config. of `Ni^(2+)` ion
NiCn
`[Ni(CN)_(4)]^(2-)` uses inner orbital in hybridisation `(dsp^(2))`. It has no unpaired electrons and is diamagnetic.
