How is oxygen and carbon dioxide transported in human beings ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are two metabolic gases. Oxygen is required by every living cell for cellular respiration whereas `CO_(2)` is formed as a by-product and has to be eliminated from the body. In human beings, a pigment haemoglobin is present in red blood corpuscles which has a strong affinity for oxygen, takes up the oxygen from the air in the lungs and carry it to tissues which are deficient in oxygen. Some `O_(2)` is transported in dissolved state in blood plasms. Carbon dioxide which is more soluble in water than oxygen is mostly transported in the dissolved state in our blood. Some `CO_(2)` is transported by haemoglobin as carbaminohaemoglobin .
