What are the reactions involved for ozone layer depletion in the stratosphere?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the stratosphere, ozone is a product of the action of UV radiation on dioxygen as:
(i) `O_(2(g)) overset(UV) rarr O_((g))+O_((g))`
(ii) `O_(2(g))+O_((g)) overset(UV) harr O_(3(g))`
Reaction (ii) indicates the dynamic equilibrium existing between the production and decompsition of ozone molecules. Any factor that distrubs the equilibrium may cause depletion of ozone layer by its decomposition. One such factor is the release of chloroflurocarbon compounds (CFCs). These are non-reactive, non-flammable molecules that are used in refrigerators, air conditioneres, plastics, and electronic industries. Onece released CFCs mix with atmosphric gases and reach the stratosphere, where they are decomposed by UV radiations.
(iii) `CF_(2)Cl_(2(g)) overset(UV) rarr overset(.)(Cl_((g)))+ overset(.)CF_(2)Cl_((g))`
The chlorine free redical produced in reaction (iii) reacts with ozone as:
(iv) `overset(.)Cl_((g))+O_(3(g)) rarr Cloverset(.)O_((g))+O_(2((g))`
The `overset (.)Cl_((g))` radical further react with atomic oxygen to produce more chlorine radicals as:
(v) `Cloverset(.)O_((g))+O_((g)) rarr overset(.)Cl_((g))+O_(2(g))`
The regeneration of `overset(.)Cl_((g))` causes a continuous breakdown of ozone present in the stratosphere, damaging the ozone layer.

Ozone depletion in stratosphere shall result in:

Assertion : An equilibrium is established is istablished between generation and destruction of ozone, leading to a steady state concentration of ozone layer in the stratosphere at an altitude of 20-30 km above sea level. Reason : The thickness of the ozone layer is generally larger above the equator and smaller above the poles.
