Out of C and CO, which is better reducing agent for ZnO?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

the two reduction reactions are :
`ZnO(s) +C(s) to Zn(S) +CO(g) …..(i) `
` ZnO(s) =Co(g) to Zn(s) +CO_(2)(g) … (ii)`
in the first ,there isincrease in the magnitude of `DeltaS^(@)` while in the second sace it almost remains the same in other wards `Delta G^(@)` will have more nagative value in the first case when C(S) is used as the reducing agent than in the second case when CO(g) acts as the redcing agent therefore c(S) is a better reducing agent .
