What happens when (A)PCl(5) is heated....

What happens when
(A)`PCl_(5)` is heated.
(B)`PCl_(5)` is reacted with heavy water.
( C)`H_(3)PO_(3)` is heated.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All the bonds that are present in `PCl_(5)` are not similar. It has three equatorial and two axial bonds. The equatorial bonds are stronger than the axial ones. Therefore, when `PCl_(5)` is heated strongly, it decomposes to form `PCl_(3)`.
`PCl_(5)overset("heat")toPCl_(3)+ Cl_(2)`
