A disc rotating about its axis with angular speed `omega_(0)` is placed lightly (without any translational pull) on a perfectly frictionless table. The radius of the disc is `R`. What are the linear velocities of the points `A, B and C` on the disc shown in Fig. Will the disc roll in the direction indicated ?

Text Solution

Since `" " v=romega`,
For point, A, `" " v_(A)=R omega_(0)` in the direction of arrow.
For point, B, `" " v_(B)=R omega_(0)` in the opposite direction of arrow.
For point, C, `" " v_(C )=(R )/(2)omega_(0)` in the direction of arrow.
the disc will not roll in the given direction because friction is necessary for the same.

A charge Q is uniformly distributed over the surface of non - conducting disc of radius R . The disc rotates about an axis perpendicular to its plane and passing through its centre with an angular to its plane and passing through its centre of the disc. If we keep both the amount of charge placed on the disc and its angular velocity to be constant and vary the radius of the disc then the variation of the magnetic induction at the centre of the disc will br represented by the figure:

A disc of radius R is spun to an angualr speed omega_(0) about its axis and then imparted a horizontal velocity of magnitude (omega_(0)R)/(4) . The coefficient of friction is mu . The sense of rotation and direction of linear velocity are shown in the figure. The disc will return to its initial position.
