What makes a glass different from a solid such as quartz ? Under what condition could quartz be converted into glass ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Glass is an amorphous solid in which the constituent particles (`SiO_(4)` tetrahedra) have only a short range order. Quartz is a crystalline form of silica in which `SiO_(4)` units are arranged in such a way that have long ranged order. Quartz can be converted into glass by melting it and cooling it rapidly.
