State Henry's law. What is the effect of temperature on the solubility of a gas in a liquid ?

Text Solution

The relationship between pressure and solubility is guided by Henry.s Law. According to this law, "The mass of a gas dissolved in given volume of the liquid at a constant temperature depends upon the pressure which is applied."
It can also be stated as the partial pressure of the gas in vapour phase (P) is proportional to the mole fraction of the gas (x) in the solution.
P = `K_(H)` X
Where, `K_(H)` = Henry.s constant .

Effect of Tempenture 6n the Solubility : The solubility of a gas decreases with increase in temperature. This is because dissolution of gases in the liquids is an exothermic process. Therefore, according ito Le-Chatelier.s principle, the increase in temperature results in decrease in the solubility of the gas.
