At a given temperature and pressure nitrogen gas is more soluble in water than helium gas. Which one of them has higher value of `K_(H)` ?

Text Solution

Henry.s law states that the solubility of gas at a given temperature is directly proportional to the pressure at which it is dissolved.
p `prop X_(B)` or p = `K_(H) X_(B)` .
Here, `K_(H)` is the constant of proportionality called Henry law constant.
Significance of `K_(H)`
`K_(H)` is expressed in the units of pressure torr or k bar.
The value of `K_(H)` of a gas increases with increase in temperature.
At a given temperature, and for the same value of pressure p, the solubility of a gas (expressed in mol fraction) is inversely proportional to `K_(H) (X_(B) prop (1)/(K_(H)) )`. This means that higher the value of
`K_(H)` for a gas lower will be its solubility at a given temperature. `K_(H)` for `H_(2)` and He : As `H_(2)` is more soluble than He, it means that `K_(H)` for Hydrogen is lower than that for helium.
