In certain simple plants, why are male gametes produced in large numbers as compared to the female gametes? It is applicable in animals also? Yes or not.

In those plants, water is the medium through which gamete transfer takes place. A large number of the male gametes, however, fail to reach the femalegametes. To compensate this loss of male gametes during transpot, they are produced in large numbers. Yes it is also applicable in animals.
