Why is the process of fertilization in a flowering plant referred to as double fertilization?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Fertilization in flowering plants is referred to as double fertilization because both the male gametes of the same microspore take part in fusion. One fuses with the egg to form the diploid zygote and the other fuses with the two polar nuclei to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus.
