Human genome project is a 13 year old project, it is a mega project which involves sequencing the whole DNA of the genome.
Salient features of human genome project are as follows:
Human genome consists of 30000 genes much less than the partier estimates of 80000 genes.
On an average individual gene consists of 3000 nucleotide bases. Largest known gene is dystrophin with 2,4 k base pairs.
Human genome consists of 3164.7 million nucleotide base pairs.
More than 50% of DNA the function is unknown.
Almost 99.9 % of DNA of all the different human beings, animals is same.
Less than 2% of the gene code for proteins called functional DNA.
The DNA on a large consists of large repetitive sequences i.e., small nucleotide base sequence repeats several times in the same DNA which do not code for any protein but account for the structure of DNA.
Chromosomes 1 have the most genes and the chromosome Y has the fewest genes.
There are nearly 2.4 million single nucleotide base differences (SNIPS) are found out which account for many of the characters.
These single nucleotide base differences are responsible for the genetic difference and genetic disorder.
