What are 'Selectable markers"? What is their use in genetic engineering?

A selectable marker is a gene which helps in selecting those host cells which contain the vector and eliminating the non-transformants. e.g .. gene encoding resistance to antibiotics are useful selectable markers as they allow selective growth of transformants only.
