Unsaturated hydrocarbons contain multiple bonds between the two carbon atoms and show addition reactions. Give the test to distinguish ethane from ethene.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When unsaturated hydrocarbons are treated with acidified potassium permanganate, they decolourise the solution, the pink colour of the solution disappears and becomes colourless. When ethene is mixed with acidified potassium permanganate solution it decolourises the solution whereas ethane, if treated with the same solution, doesn.t show any colour change.
