What is saponification?...

What is saponification?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When esters react with strong bases like NaOH or KOH, they form sodium/potassium salt of carboxylic acid and alcohol. The salt formed is soap. This reaction is called as saponification. Example: `CH_3COOC_2H_4 + NaOH to C_2 H_5OH+`
