Why do all elements of the same group have similar properties?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since valence electrons are in the outermost shell, they are weakly attracted by the nucleus and are free to interact with other substances. Hence, valence electrons are responsible for all the chemical properties of an atom. Elements in the same group of the periodic table have the same number of valence electrons. Therefore, they have similar chemical properties.
