How would the tendency to gain electrons change as you go from left to right across a peroid?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

a] As we move from left to right along a period, electronegative character increases. This is because of increase in the number of protons which increases the positive charge on the nucleus. Thus, the attractive force between the nucleus and valence electrons increases thereby increasing the tendency of atoms to gain electrons. This increases electronegativity
b] Out of N and F, F is more electronegative since it is placed to the right of N in the same period of the periodic table.
