Give an example of characteristics being used to determine how close two species are in evolutionary terms.

The characteristic: Wings
The wings of bats and birds have different origin. Their design and structure are different though they perform the same function (flight). Wings of Birds are covered with feathers while the wings of bats are folded skin stretched over elongated fingers. Hence they are not closely related in evolutionary terms.
