(a) Peat is a compact dark coloured substance, rich in carbon, formed from dead remains of Sphagnum plant parts in acidic marshes which get accumulated year after year, slowly compressed and become hardened due to weight.
(b) Peat is dried, cut into pieces and used as fuel.
(ii) It is mixed in clayey soil to keep it porous and mixed in sandy soil to improve its water holding capacity.
(ii) Many chemical products such as alcohols, ammonium sulphat, peat tar, paraffin, nitrates, brown dye, tanning etc. are obtained from peat.
