A carnot engine is an engine converting heat energy into mechanical energy using a cyclic process consisting of two isothermal and two adiabatic reversible process.
OR
A heat engine based on carnot cycle is known as carnot engine which works between two temperature.
Schematic representation of carnot engine is shown in below figure.

Carnot engine consists of a cylinder whose all sides are perfect insulators of heat except the bottom and a piston sliding without friction.
A gas which considered as ideal gas is filled in the cylinder.
It has a source of heat having large heat capacity at a temperature `T_1` and a heat sink having very large capacity at temperature `T_2` are used. Here `T_1 gt T_2`.
It has insulating stand.
