In order to obtain the `F_1` generation, Mendel pollinated a true-breeding, say, tall plant with a true-breeding dwarf plant. But for getting the `F_2` generation, he simply self-pollinated the tall `F_1` plants. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Genotype of 50% of the offspring would resemble one parent and the rest the other parent. All the `F_1` offsprings of the cross are heterozygous so allowing self-pollination is sufficient to raise `F_2` offspring. Also he intended to understand the inheritance of the selected trait over generations.

In one of his experiments with pea plants Mendel observed that when a pure tall pea plant is crossed with a pure dwarf pea plant, in the first generation, F_(1) only tall plants appeared. (i) What happens to the traits of the dwarf plants in this case? (ii) When the F_(1) generation plants were self-fertilised, he observed that in the plants of second generation, F_(2) both tall plants and dwarf plants were present. Why it happened? Explain briefly.
