When HCl reacts with powdered iron, ferrous chloride is formed, but not ferric chloride. Why?

Reaction of iron with hydrochloric acid produces ferrous chloride and liberate hydrogen.
`Fe + 2HCl to FeCl_2 + H_2`.
This liberated hydrogen prevents the formation of ferric chloride.
