Write a note on hydrogen halides....

Write a note on hydrogen halides.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

All the elements react with hydrogen to give hydrogen halides but affinity for hydrogen decreases from fluorine to iodine. Hydrogen halides dissolves in water to form hydrohalic acids.

The acidic strength of hydrogen halides increases with the increase in size of halogen atom. Also the stability of hydrogen halides decreases down the group due to decrease in bond dissociation enthalpy of H-X bond.
Acidic Strength : HF < HCl < HBr < HI
Thermal Stability : HF > HCl > HBr > HI
Except HF, all hydrogen halides are gaseous in state. HF exists in liquid state due to intermolecular H-bonding.
