In the preparation of `H_2SO_4` by Contact Process, why is `SO_(3)` not absorbed directly in water to form `H_2SO_4` ?

If `SO_3` is absorbed directly in water, acid fog is formed with the release of large amount of heat. Also, the acid fog is very difficult to condense.
