Why is nitric oxide paramagnetic in gaseous state but the solid obtained on cooling it is diamagnetic ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitric oxide molecule is an odd electron molecule with presence of single electron on
nitrogen atom. `:overset(..)N=underset(..)overset(..)O`
Hence, NO is paramagnetic in gaseous state. In solid state however it forms dimer. `(N_2O_2)`.
