Explain the magnetic fields of the Earth.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

To describe the magnetic field of the earth at a point on its surface, we need to specify three quantities.

(i) The declination D
(ii) The angle of dip or the inclination I
(iii) The horizontal component of Earth.s field `H_E`
(iv) The vertical component of earth.s field `Z_E`
All these are known as the elements of the earth.s magnetic field.
From figure,
`H_E= B_E cos I" "....(1)`
`Z_E= B_E sin I" "...(2)`
`therefore tan I = (Z_E)/( H_E) " "...(3)`
and `B_E = sqrt(H_(E)^(2) + Z_(E)^(2) ) " "...(4)`
