Optical and radiotelescopes are built on the ground but X - ray astronomy is possible only from satellites orbiting the earth. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Because, Earth.s atmosphere is transparent to radio waves and visible light. But X - rays get absorbed by Earth.s atmosphere. Hence we take the help of ..Geo - stationary satellite.., orbitting around the Earth, approximately at the height 36000 km, for the study of ..X - ray astronomy... At this great height atmosphere is quite thin and so X - rays are not absorbed.

A satellite of mass m is in an elliptical orbit around the earth of mass M(M gt gt m) the speed of the satellite at its nearest point ot the earth (perigee) is sqrt((6GM)/(5R)) where R= its closest distance to the earth it is desired to transfer this satellite into a circular orbit around the earth of radius equal its largest distance from the earth. Find the increase in its speed to be imparted at the apogee (farthest point on the elliptical orbit).

A satellite is to be placed in equatorial geostationary orbit around the earth for communication. (a) Calculate height of such a satellite. (b) Find out the minimum number of satellites that are needed to cover entire earth, so that atleast one satellite is visible from any point on the equator. [M = 6 xx 10^(24) kg, R = 6400 km, T = 24 h, G = 667 x 10-^(11) SI unit]

A satellite of mass m is orbiting the earth (of radius R ) at a height h from its surface. The total energy of the satellite in terms of g_(0) , the value of acceleration due to gravity at the earth's surface,

As you have learnt in the text a geostationary satellite orbits the earth at a height of nearly 36,000 km from the surface of the earth. What is the potential due to earth's gravity at the site of this satellite ? (Take the potential energy at infinity to be zero). Mass of the earth 6.0xx 10^(24(kg) , Radius = 6400 km .

These both situation is truely shown in graph (D) A satellite of mass m is orbiting the earth (of radius R) at a height h from its surface. The total energy of the satellite in terms of g_0 , the value of acceleration due to gravity at the earth's surface, is

If the law of gravitation be such that the force of attraction between two particles varies inversely as the 5//2^(th) powr of their separation then the graph of orbital velocity v_(0) plotted against the distance r of a satellite from the earth's centre on a log-log scale is shown. The slope of line will be

A geostationary satellite is orbiting the earth at a height of 6R above the surface of the earth, where R is the radius of the earth. The time period of another satellite at a height of 2.5 R from the surface of the earth is …… hours.
