Water rises in a capillary tube to a height of 2.0cm. In another capillary tube whose radius is one third of it, how much the water will rise?

A

5cm

B

3cm

C

6cm

D

9cm

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

According to ascent formula, `h= (2S cos theta)/(r rho g)`
For a given liquid, `hr= (2S cos theta)/(rho g)`= constant
`:. h_(1) r_(1) = h_(2) r_(2)`
or `h_(2) = (h_(1) r_(1))/(r_(2)) = ((2.0 ) (r_(1)))/((r_(1)//3)) = (2.0) (3) = 6.0cm`
