Write Hooke's law....

Write Hooke's law.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

"For small deformations the stress and strain are proportional to each other". This is known as Hooke.s law.
stress `prop` `therefore` strain stress `= kxx` strain
where k is the proportionality constant and is known as modulus of elasticity.
Hooke.s law is an empirical law and it is valid for most materials.
However, there are some materials which do not exhibit this linear relationship.
SI unit of k is `Nm^(-2) or Pa`
Dimensional formula is `[M^(1) L^(-1) T ^(-2)]`

The extension in a string, obeying Hooke's law, is x. The speed of sound in the stretched string is v. If the extension in the string is increased to 1.5 x , the speed of sound will be :-

Assertion:- Materials can be streched even beyond proportionality limit. (point till which Hooke's law is valid is called proportionality limit) Reason:- Elastic forces can be conservative even beyond proportional limit.
