Why many lines are observed in the hydrogen emission spectrum ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrogen atom has many states.
The lowest energy state is n = 1.
The highest energy state is `n = alpha`.
During emission electrons of some .H. atoms come directly to n=1, other atoms go to intermediate states and finally to n=1, giving many spectral lines.
