Why the total energy of atomic electron is negative ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When an electron is at infinite distance to the atomic nucleus, its energy is taken arbitrarily as zero.
As the electron moves close to the nucleus, it loses energy therefore, the energy becomes less than zero and is negative.
