How would you convert chlorobenzne and toulene into benzene ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Chlorobenzne can be converted to benzen by the reaction with magnesium in dry ether followed by hydrolysis.
`C_(6)H_(5)Cl underset("ether")overset(Mg)to underset("Grignard reagent")(C_(6)H_(5)MgCl) overset(H_(2)O //H^(+))to underset("Benzene")(C_(6)H_(6)+Mg(OH)Cl`
Benzene is obtained from toluene by the oxidation with `KMnO_(4)+KOH` and then decarboxylation with soda lime `(CaO+NaOH)`
