Explain the formula of calcium oxide in terms of the configurations of calcium and oxygen

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Calcium (Z=20) has `1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 4s^2` configuration. It loses two electrons to form `Ca^(+2)` ion. Oxygen atom gains both of these electrons to form oxide ion `O^(2-)`. Therefore, the formula of calcium oxide is `Ca^(2+) O^(2-)`
