Will the formal charges of an atom in a molecule remain the same? Why or why not?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No. the formal charge on an atom may not be same. It changes with the structural environment of the atom in the molecule. In resonance structures the electronic environment changes. Hence the formal charges also may change.
Example :`N_2 O` has the resonance structures

The formal charges in structure I were worked out earlier. In structure (II) the formal charges of `N_((1)) , N_((2))` and O are 0, +1 and -1 respectively.
